Protests erupted in Athens over the weekend, resulting in the arrest of 72 individuals after Molotov cocktails were thrown at police. The chaos unfolded in the Exarchia neighborhood, a well-known area popular with tourists, where videos showed numerous vehicles ablaze as clashes intensified.
Local media reported that fireworks and stones were hurled at a police station, leading to the ignition of parked cars and motorbikes. One police officer was injured amidst the unrest, according to Greek broadcaster EPTNews.
The violence sparked after a music event nearby and escalated as rioters attacked police at the junction of Kallidromiou and E. Benaki streets, prompting officers to respond with chemical agents. This incident comes shortly after a bomb explosion near the offices of Greece’s main railway operator, Hellenic Train, which had caused minor damage but no injuries.
The riot coincided with the anniversary of Greece’s deadliest railway disaster in 2023, where 57 people lost their lives when a freight and a passenger train collided on the same track due to grave safety shortcomings. This tragedy has spurred ongoing protests against the government, particularly among the families of the victims, seeking accountability.
In recent weeks, Greece has witnessed frequent demonstrations, including a significant rally demanding higher wages to combat rising living costs. Despite a cumulative 35% increase in the national minimum wage since 2019, many citizens struggle with soaring costs of living, prompting widespread discontent across the country.
