Heads up, travelers! Starting May 7, 2025, a new identification requirement goes into effect for air travelers in the United States. Each adult over the age of 18 will need a Real ID or an alternative form of acceptable identification to pass through airport security.
What is a Real ID?
A Real ID is a type of driver’s license or identification card that meets federal security standards as established by the Real ID Act. It is essential for domestic flights within the U.S. and for entering secure federal locations, such as military bases and courthouses.
According to the TSA, travelers who do not possess a Real ID by the enforcement date may face delays or could be denied the ability to fly domestically. However, they can still use other TSA-approved forms of identification, such as a valid U.S. passport.
Approved Identification Alternatives
If you do not have a Real ID, you can still fly with one of the following TSA-approved identifications:
- U.S. passport
- U.S. passport card
- DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
- Department of Defense ID, including those issued to dependents
- Border crossing card
- Tribal identification card from a federally recognized nation
- Foreign government-issued passport
- U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card
- Veteran Health Identification Card
Getting a Real ID
Real ID-compliant licenses and IDs are issued by driver’s licensing agencies in all states and Washington, D.C. In states like Ohio, for instance, once your application for a Real ID is processed, you should receive the card within 10 business days.
To obtain a Real ID, you need to present various documents to prove:
- Full legal name
- Date of birth
- Social Security number
- Current Ohio street address (two documents from different sources)
- Proof of name change (if applicable)
Do Children Need a Real ID?
Generally, children under 18 traveling with parents do not require a Real ID. However, unaccompanied minors flying commercially will need either a compliant card or a standard card with other federally accepted documentation.
Real ID Cost
In Ohio, a Real ID card costs the same as a standard driver’s license — $24.50 for a four-year license or $48 for an eight-year card.
It’s crucial to check your current ID status, as the Real ID requirement is fast approaching. If your ID does not have a star in the upper right corner, it may not be compliant with the new regulations. For those who have valid U.S. passports, remember that you do not need a Real ID for domestic flights, but you’ll still need a passport for international travel.
