Summer is approaching, and despite economic challenges, many Americans are planning vacations. According to NerdWallet’s survey, about 40% of people intend to travel by air or stay in hotels, expecting to spend nearly $4,000 on their trips. Fortunately, a majority of these travelers—91%—are also looking for ways to save.
Fifth Third Bank suggests several budget-friendly strategies to enjoy summer travel without financial strain:
1. Book Early
Securing deals often requires early bookings for flights and hotels. It’s recommended to book international flights at least 90 days in advance for better rates and flight times. Notably, August turns out to be the cheapest month to travel, and flying on Saturdays is typically less expensive than Sundays.
2. Shop Around for Destinations
Instead of choosing popular tourist spots, consider lesser-known locations. Trending destinations for 2025 include Osaka, Kuala Lumpur, and Buenos Aires. Exploring undiscovered areas can lead to savings, especially during the off-season, like visiting ski resorts in summer.
3. Make It a Work Trip
With the rise of remote work, many can incorporate their job into vacations. This "workcation" approach allows travelers to work from their destination. It can help avoid peak travel costs and extend stays at discounted weekly or monthly rates.
4. Establish Your Travel Goals
Clarifying what you want to experience on your trip can optimize your budget. Exploring local parks, utilizing free museum days, or enjoying casual dining at farmers’ markets can provide enriching experiences without high costs.
5. Set a Travel Budget
Before departing, create a realistic travel budget. Estimate overall expenses based on your destination and length of stay, then break it down by category (essential vs. non-essential expenses). Implement budgeting apps to monitor spending. Using cash for discretionary purchases can also keep impulse spending in check.
By following these tips, travelers can enjoy summer adventures without undue financial stress.
