Social media frequently buzzes with the latest wellness trends, and currently, a lot of talk revolves around the health benefits of what are dubbed cortisol cocktails.
Interestingly, these cocktails don’t actually include alcohol but rather a mix of various minerals and vitamins. Influencers promote these drinks as a panacea for ailments ranging from fatigue to stress relief.
There has been a 277% increase in searches for “cortisol detox drink” over the last month, and TikTok videos about cortisol cocktail recipes have amassed over 870,000 views, suggesting a growing interest in these mixtures for managing cortisol imbalances.
While it’s tempting to get caught up in the excitement, one might wonder if a cocktail can truly regulate hormones and alleviate stress, or if perhaps, we should be more skeptical about these claims.
Cortisol, most commonly known as the stress hormone, is produced and regulated in adrenal glands located near the top of the kidneys. These glands affect both the central nervous system and the endocrine system.
“Cortisol is your body’s primary stress hormone, and it’s essential for many functions—regulating blood sugar, inflammation, and even your sleep cycle,” explains Nutrition expert Kyle Crowley at Protein Works.
Crowley says cortisol is not the villain it’s made out to be.
“The problem is that in our high-stress world, cortisol levels can stay elevated for too long, leading to issues like fatigue, weight gain, and sleep disruption,” he explains.
“However, the popularity of cortisol-related wellness trends has convinced many individuals that they are perpetually suffering from cortisol imbalances. In truth, for the majority of the population, cortisol functions appropriately. It’s our lifestyle habits like inadequate sleep, excessive work, and ongoing stress that cause cortisol levels to remain elevated for extended periods.”
Cortisol cocktails, typically composed of orange juice, coconut water, sea salt, and occasionally added ingredients such as cream of tartar or magnesium, are touted as a natural solution for replenishing the body’s electrolytes and bolstering adrenal health.
Proponents of the cocktail claim that the vitamin C from orange juice, the sodium from sea salt, and the potassium from coconut water and cream of tartar help rejuvenate the body’s adrenal glands.
While Crowley is hesitant to label it as a panacea, he admits that the primary components of the cocktail do offer some legitimate health benefits:
Vitamin C from orange juice: Orange juice is a significant source of vitamin C, essential for bolstering the immune system and enhancing the body’s ability to handle stress efficiently. “Vitamin C is crucial for adrenal gland function, as these glands have some of the highest concentrations of vitamin C in the body,” Crowley notes. “It plays a role in controlling cortisol production.”
Sodium from sea salt: Sodium is vital for maintaining electrolyte balance, which is crucial for the proper functioning of adrenal glands. “In conditions of chronic stress or exhaustion, your body may deplete essential electrolytes,” Crowley mentions. “Sea salt is beneficial as it provides sodium, which maintains fluid balance and helps replenish electrolyte levels.”
Potassium from coconut water and cream of tartar: Coconut water is an excellent natural source of potassium, important for balancing body sodium levels and ensuring proper muscle functionality and energy. “Cream of tartar is also a potent source of potassium, beneficial in sustaining electrolyte equilibrium,” adds Crowley.
While Crowley acknowledges that the drink is harmless, he points out that the main problem with trends such as cortisol cocktails is their perception as instant solutions.
“The ingredients are generally healthy and can certainly offer a refreshing pick-me-up,” he explains. “But to believe that this drink will single-handedly restore adrenal health or drastically reduce stress is missing the bigger picture.
“We seem to live in a world where people want fast solutions to complex issues,” Crowley continues. “But stress, and how it impacts our cortisol levels, can’t be fixed with a single drink or supplement.”
Crowley says prioritising quality sleep, practising mindfulness, and eating a nutrient-dense diet are what will truly balance your hormones and lower cortisol levels over time.
“You don’t need a special mocktail for this,” he explains. “Simply eating a variety of fruits, vegetables, and staying hydrated throughout the day will provide the same nutrients, often in better balance.”
Cortisol cocktails may be a fun, nutrient-packed drink, but they should be viewed as part of a bigger picture, not a cure-all.
Instead Crowley advises a multi-faceted approach to managing stress and hormone health:
Sleep. Sleep is one of the most powerful tools for regulating cortisol. “When you’re sleep-deprived, your cortisol levels remain elevated, which can lead to a host of issues, including increased stress and difficulty maintaining a healthy weight,” Crowley explains.
Exercise. Regular exercise is a great way to manage stress, but Crowley says balance is key. “Over-exercising can actually spike cortisol levels, so it’s important to mix in lower-intensity activities like walking or yoga to keep cortisol in check,” he explains.
Balanced diet. Crowley mentions that a mix of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats are essential for providing the necessary nutrients to manage stress and maintain healthy adrenal glands.
Stress management. Techniques such as meditation or deep breathing significantly reduce cortisol levels, according to Crowley. He points out, “It’s not always about doing more; sometimes, it’s about slowing down and allowing your body to reset.”
Consistency. Crowley emphasizes that managing cortisol effectively relies on consistency rather than fleeting trends. He states, “It’s easy to get caught up in wellness trends, but real change comes from daily habits that support your body holistically.”
“A cortisol cocktail won’t fix everything. Committing to long-term stress reduction, achieving restful sleep, and nourishing your body are the key elements that will make a significant difference,” he remarks.
