Beachwood Brewing is an award-winning brewery renowned for winning the World Beer Cup Champion Large Brewpub at the World Beer Cup Awards in 2016, along with silver and bronze medals at the Great American Beer Festival in 2023.
The brewery has now expanded into a new venture and started producing its own range of spirits, including gins, rums, and vodkas under Beachwood Brewing & Distilling in Long Beach.
Julian Shrago, founder, co-owner, and brewmaster of Beachwood Brewing expressed, “We wanted to diversify. It wasn’t enough to just produce beer; we were eager to delve into another type of alcoholic beverage. Given our expertise in beer brewing, we believed this knowledge would be transferable to producing either spirits or wine. Ultimately, we decided on spirits.”

Since its establishment in 2022, Beachwood Brewing & Distilling, a branch of the larger Beachwood portfolio, has not only provided food but also beer on tap. The recent addition of a distillery cocktail program now allows them to offer drinks featuring spirits produced in-house using a 150-gallon, four-plate copper column still.
The distillery primarily focuses on crafting gin, rum, and vodka. Gin, particularly, is central to their distillation efforts. “Gin is a major emphasis in our operations at the distillery. It’s a culinary-driven spirit, much like cooking, largely influenced by its botanical components,” he explained.
Shrago is also a fan of Tiki drinks so rum was a necessity, with vodka also being a top choice due to its clean and adaptable characteristics suitable for various cocktails.
“We were very curious about this too. Could we do it? Should we do it? And what do we really have to lose by trying?” Shrago pondered.
There are about two dozen cocktails featured on the new menu with standout mixes like the Saturn, which fuses house gin with passionfruit, lemon, and orgeat. The Chi Chi offers a spin on the traditional piña colada, incorporating house vodka with pineapple, coconut cream, and lime. Another highlight is the 1944 Mai Tai, a Tiki signature containing rum, lime, orgeat, and orange curaçao. Classics such as the gin and tonic are also available, utilizing homemade tonic water.
“We have multiple scratch-made tonic waters and several varieties of gin. It’s almost like a choose your own adventure when selecting a gin and tonic at our distillery,” he explained.
While Beachwood is still primarily known for beers, Shrago thinks beer drinkers will enjoy their cocktails as much as their brews.
“I’m confident they will taste the passion and the research and the purpose behind every drink,” he said.
