It was a bustling day at Philadelphia International Airport as travelers returned home after the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Many passengers reported lengthy waits at TSA, with lines extending nearly to the other end of the terminal. Some travelers experienced wait times approaching 40 minutes, which contributed to the hectic atmosphere.
Among those waiting was Paul Bruce, returning to Atlanta, who remarked on the unexpected crowd. "I don’t know if Philly is just a busy place to travel out of on a Sunday after Thanksgiving, but that’s what it seems like right now," he said.
The flood of people included travelers whose flights were delayed due to a power outage at Terminal D the previous Saturday. Morgan Rosenbaum and her companion faced an extended stay, as they missed their flight after sitting in the airport for five hours. "We got an airport hotel, stayed here overnight, and now we’re back again," Rosenbaum shared.
Airport officials estimated over 1 million passengers would travel through PHL during the holiday week, with Sunday alone seeing nearly 100,000 travelers. Despite the frustrations of flying, many passengers echoed sentiments expressing that the time spent with family made the challenges worthwhile.
"It’s a thing you just got to deal with in life. There’s not much you can do about it," reflected traveler Jim Mellon. Robby Delgado added that the experience was ultimately rewarding because of the opportunity to reconnect with loved ones.
In light of the busy travel season, the importance of family and holiday gatherings stood out for many, making the stressful travel experiences feel more meaningful.
