Chef Javier Bardauil, of the acclaimed Barda, heads Puma with the intent of creating a lively atmosphere reminiscent of establishments in Buenos Aires and Spain. The decor is accentuated by colorful highlights, encouraging a casual yet energizing dining experience. With an emphasis on communal seating, diners are immersed in a cacophony of sounds from both the kitchen and live DJ performances, bringing an air similar to a bustling nightclub.
Puma opened its doors during Detroit’s Movement music festival, marking its identity as a dynamic hub for music and gastronomy. While it doesn’t feature a dedicated dance floor, the high-energy environment can lead to spontaneous dancing, especially as the night progresses.
The drink menu celebrates South American beverages, including pisco cocktails and refreshing tereré inspired drinks—reflecting diverse regional drinking customs. Wine is playfully served in ceramic pitchers typical of Buenos Aires restaurants.
The food menu is diverse, offering a taste of South American culinary richness. Highlights include ceviche options like aguachile de camarón, and the delectably crispy Ecuadorian empanadas. The choripán, a classic Argentine sandwich with fire-grilled chorizo, is crafted with exquisite attention to detail, while the chivito—Uruguay’s national dish—features tallow-fried ribeye, seared to perfection.
The restaurant sources its bread from The Mother Loaf, maintaining a local connection even after the closure of beloved Detroit Institute of Bagels. Desserts, like their dulce de leche served with peanuts, round out the dining experience beautifully.
Puma operates with no reservations, functioning on a first-come, first-served basis and is wheelchair accessible, inviting diners from all walks of life to enjoy its offerings.
