Lawrence, Kansas, is experiencing a surge in mocktail sales as local businesses cater to the Dry January trend. With many patrons, including University of Kansas students who have left town, looking for non-alcoholic options, venues like Burger Stand are effectively adapting. Manager Nathan Zwahln noted that mocktails provide an opportunity for people to enjoy social outings without the pressure of consuming alcohol.
"We definitely get a lot more people ordering mocktails during Dry January," Zwahln said. He pointed out that the month encourages a healthier lifestyle as many individuals strive to keep their New Year’s resolutions, at least temporarily.
Customers also find benefits in opting for non-alcoholic drinks. Erin Cahill, a regular at Burger Stand, remarked that skipping alcoholic beverages can lead to just as much fun.
In addition, Great Blue Heron Outdoors recently expanded its menu to include a variety of non-alcoholic drinks in preparation for the dry month. Staff member Allie Jakubauskas expressed optimism about attracting more customers during this period, stating, “Hopefully, we’ll be able to bring in a greater number of people with Dry January."
For regulars like Curtis Marsh, the beginning of the year feels like an opportunity for a fresh start. He appreciates the chance to try something new and participate in the trend.
As more venues embrace the mocktail movement, the support for Dry January continues to grow, highlighting a shift in social norms surrounding alcohol consumption.
