According to a recent survey conducted by Future Partners, a San Francisco-based tourism and market research firm, three travel trends have emerged as the most popular among American travelers for 2025: slowcations, foodie trips, and experiential travel.
The survey, which included over 4,000 respondents, found that both slowcations and foodie trips garnered 57% popularity, while experiential travel closely followed at 55.9%. The concept of slowcations is about taking a more thoughtful approach to travel, focusing on deeper experiences rather than trying to squeeze in numerous activities. Claudia Vecchio, president and CEO of Sonoma County Tourism, emphasized how this aligns with cultural tourism, promoting personalized experiences in local tasting rooms and vineyards.
Sonoma County is home to over 425 wineries, which provide ideal opportunities for those looking to engage in slowcations centered around wine. Napa Valley, with more than 400 wineries, is also a well-suited destination for similar travel experiences.
In addition to wine, the culinary scene in Sonoma County boasts a wide range of dining options fueled by its rich agricultural offerings. Visitors can enjoy Michelin-starred restaurants, farmers’ markets, food trucks, and various food-related events, reinforcing the appeal of foodie trips.
Experiential travel, focusing on personal passions such as cuisine, historical sites, and outdoor adventures, found a strong presence in the survey results. Napa Valley, known for its diverse offerings like the Napa Valley Vine Trail and hot-air balloon rides, caters well to these kinds of travelers.
While gig-tripping—a trend indicated by attendance at music festivals like BottleRock—scored lower at 42%, it remains significant, especially in Napa Valley, as it attracts a younger, more diverse crowd.
The survey also highlighted several other notable travel trends for 2025:
- Plan-Free Travel (48%): A flexible approach to travel that encourages spontaneity, appealing especially to parents of young children.
- Sleep Tourism (45%): Focused on relaxation and wellness.
- Solo Travel (43%): Travelers who prefer planning their trips through travel agents and influencers.
- Skillcations (39%): Educational trips aimed at learning new skills, often with larger travel budgets.
- Coolcations (36%): Vacations in cooler areas to escape extreme heat, with many expecting to travel abroad in 2025.
- Doom Tourism (26%): Visiting destinations at risk of changing or disappearing, particularly popular among younger travelers.
These trends suggest a significant shift in travel preferences, with many prioritizing connection, quality experiences, and unique offerings close to home.
