A new travel trend has emerged on TikTok, dubbed "hurkle-durkling," which is derived from a Scottish term meaning to lounge in bed for extended periods. This trend is gaining traction as more travelers seek wellness and relaxation during their trips.
Hotels are starting to cater to guests looking to embrace this concept, particularly during the colder winter months when a cozy day indoors feels most appealing. The Williams Inn in Williamstown, Massachusetts, has introduced a “Literary Sabbatical” package that offers guests curated libraries to enjoy while they relax under the covers.
Megan Hajduk, the general manager of The Williams Inn, emphasizes the trend’s popularity during winter as guests find comfort in spending a day submerged in warmth and leisure. Similarly, Nour Laasri, the general manager at Marriott Marquis in Houston, noted that travelers increasingly seek a balance of productivity and relaxation during their stays.
A report by Hilton reveals that a top reason for travel among guests is the desire to "rest and recharge." In support of "hurkle-durkling," some hotels like Bellyard in Atlanta have begun offering amenities such as in-room IV therapy and soaking tubs, encouraging guests to slow down and savor the moment.
According to a trade association for UK travel agents, a significant majority of travelers—73%—report that vacations are primarily a time for relaxation, indicating a broader trend in the travel industry towards wellness-focused experiences.
