A recent visit to Louie’s Original, which opened in October 2024 and is a sister restaurant to the acclaimed Spruce, has stirred anticipation among culinary enthusiasts. Located in Potrero Hill, the establishment is known for its renowned burger, which reportedly possesses remarkable qualities, even rumored to induce labor for expectant mothers.
The restaurant occupies a narrow space beneath a luxury apartment, embodying a modern feel that complements its surroundings. Expectant diners can choose from an array of burgers, fries, and shakes, making it a cozy stop during chilly evenings.
Among the highlights was the distinguished Big Sister burger, featuring aged white cheddar, romaine, Roma tomato, pickled vegetables, and a secret sauce, all assembled within a house-made, cornmeal-dusted English muffin. It was accompanied by crispy chicken tenders, though they didn’t quite impress, as they fell on the dryer side.
The Louie’s Original burger is tailored specifically for this venue, offering patrons the choice of a single or double patty, topped with a selection of toppings including American or cheddar cheese, avocado, or bacon, all enclosed in a soft house-made brioche bun. The reviews praised this burger as a considerable improvement, with the Little Louie priced at a wallet-friendly $8.
The highlight of the meal, however, were the waffle fries. Described as light, crispy, and fluffy, they surpassed typical expectations for waffle fries, which can often be greasy or overcooked. Additionally, the onion rings, coated in a thin beer batter, received positive feedback.
On the other hand, the adventurous Make ‘em Messy Fries, topped with various ingredients, turned out to be surprisingly balanced and palatable, rather than overwhelming. However, the milkshakes fell short of expectations, lacking the creamy texture one might hope for, despite one diner enjoying a peppermint variant.
Louie’s Original also offers craft beer and a respectable wine selection at reasonable prices, making it a potential lunchtime spot for those in the area. In conclusion, while not exceptionally noteworthy, it provides a solid option for casual dining and is a welcomed addition to Potrero Hill’s food scene.
