Miss Potz, a hidden gem in Mt Lawley, deserves to be on everyone’s dining radar, especially for those with a hearty appetite. Tucked away on Beaux Lane, this modest mod-Asian restaurant is celebrated for its Indonesian dishes, making it the perfect spot to indulge when you’re really hungry.
One of the standout dishes is the crispy spiced duck, priced at $46, served with sambal matah, pickled cucumber, and a delectable plum hoisin sauce alongside soybean pancakes. The duck legs are exquisitely spiced and roasted to crispy perfection, designed to be pulled apart, revealing rich and succulent meat—ideal for rolling up with condiments in thin pancakes that come steaming.
With its larger-than-life portions, Miss Potz has attracted diners for nearly a decade. Despite slight room for more spice in signature items like the Sticky Angus beef rendang and Singaporean chilli prawns, flavor, execution, and presentation remain top-notch across the menu. The welcoming and efficient service adds to the relaxed vibe in this cozy 40-seat eatery.
Among the drink offerings, Bintang is available alongside several bottled lagers, while the wine list features various selections by the glass priced between $9-$13. A glass of Porongurup riesling is recommended at a reasonable $9.
The menu is straightforward, offering tapas-style small plates that could easily refill any hungry stomach. We kicked off our meal with Miss Potz tofu ($9) that featured crispy cod cubes drizzled with a spicy tomato sambal vinegar, followed by pork, prawn, and chive dumplings ($16) served in a piquant soy broth and perfectly balanced salt and pepper squid ($21) with a delightful nuoc cham sauce.
When the Singaporean chilli prawns ($35) arrived, they were enormous Shark Bay tiger prawns coated in a sweet and spicy glaze. Big enough to satisfy, they were served with fried mantou rolls, perfect for soaking up the extra sauce. The beef rendang ($36), while not as fiery, offered a wonderfully aromatic experience, complemented by textures from toasted coconut and crispy curry leaves.
For sides, wok-tossed Asian greens in XO mushroom sauce ($19) paired wonderfully with our main dishes. Surprisingly, despite the hearty portions, we had no room left for dessert, though we noted a craving for that hoisin sauce, which was delicious enough to consider as a topping for ice cream.
Miss Potz is undoubtedly an unpolished gem amid the sea of fast-casual dining options in the area, serving an impressive mix of Indonesian classic dishes with modern Asian influences. This spot will certainly entice anyone who finds themselves peering at low-flying ducks.
