Cubs top prospect Matt Shaw is poised to make his major-league debut during the Tokyo Series. After being informed of his inclusion on the travel roster, Shaw expressed excitement, indicating that playing against the reigning World Series champions would be a "surreal moment." Still, he emphasized the need to "earn that spot" as final confirmations on lineups are pending.
The Cubs delayed their decision on the final position-player roster, opting to bring Shaw, especially after outfielder Kevin Alcántara was also under consideration but will likely begin the season in Triple-A. Cubs president of baseball operations, Jed Hoyer, noted that Shaw’s recovery from injury was a significant factor in the decision-making process.
Shaw was originally the favorite for the third base position, especially after the Cubs were unsuccessful in acquiring Alex Bregman. However, an earlier injury complicated the situation. Regardless, his recent performances have reassured the team’s expectations of him as a potential impact player.
Before the Tokyo Series, the Cubs have exhibition games scheduled; roster adjustments may need to be made based on player performance and any injuries that might arise during these games. The team will travel with 31 players, of which only 26 will be active for the series.
