Some restaurants create a buzz as a form of entertainment, while others let the food speak for itself. Located in Castlebar, Co Mayo, the Dining Room falls into the latter category. Established in 2016 by Shirley Stirzaker and her husband Kevin, the restaurant embodies a calm and generous dining experience, free from pretension.
When visiting midweek, we find the dining room pleasantly busy—filled with locals and a few couples. The ambiance is inviting, styled simply with dark wood floors, Prussian blue walls, matching banquettes, and neatly dressed tables featuring layers of blue and white linens.
Dining Room offers prix fixe menus, priced at €42 or €59, which include three courses plus a sorbet. This is excellent value for an evening of quality cuisine. The wine list is user-friendly, with glasses priced between €8 to €9 and bottles starting at €29, featuring familiar selections like Loire whites and Beaujolais reds.
The meal begins with freshly baked brown soda bread, served with salted farmhouse butter speckled with Achill sea salt. For the starters, I choose the scallops—three beautifully cooked pieces accompanied by Kelly’s black pudding and a silky cauliflower-artichoke purée. My dining companion orders crab, featuring light, fresh white meat garnished with a golden fried prawn and a mix of beetroot and pickled cucumber, all enveloped in a spiced oil.
Next comes the refreshing blackberry and verbena sorbet, providing a burst of flavor before the mains. I opt for halibut, cooked beautifully and served with crab and a confit tomato. While the crab gets somewhat overshadowed by the tomatoes, a beurre blanc sauce brings balance to the dish. My companion enjoys a Hereford sirloin steak, cooked to a perfect medium-rare and garnished with garlic butter—rich and flavorful.
Accompanying sides include a creamy gratin dauphinoise, smooth creamed potato, and bright, crunchy vegetables. The desserts maintain the theme of sincere delectability, with a sticky toffee pudding served hot, topped with melting ice cream and a walnut crumble, and a tangy lemon meringue served in a glass.
The service throughout the evening is impeccable—discreet yet attentive, with staff knowledgeable about the menu without hovering.
Dining Room stands out for its simplicity and dedication to good dining without frills. The promise of a satisfying dinner is fulfilled genuinely and effortlessly. Its serene atmosphere, excellent food, and thoughtful service make it a must-visit. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, the Dining Room warrants a detour for an experience that’s truly fulfilling.
