Karthika Gupta reflects on her journey of going alcohol-free at the age of 50 and the profound impact it has had on her travel experiences. Previously, drinking was a way to connect with friends and celebrate during her travels. As a management consultant, social drinking was embedded in her career, from dinners with colleagues to festive celebrations.
Upon reaching 50, Karthika decided to experiment with sobriety. Initially, the challenge was fleeting; however, as she extended her alcohol-free period, she grew curious about new experiences. Questions arose: could she enjoy celebratory moments without a drink? Would she feel alienated while exploring new places? Would her self-perception change?
One significant test occurred during a business trip to Switzerland. Dining at a boutique hotel in the Bernese Alps, she discovered a non-alcoholic pairing menu. The meal, featuring elaborate elixirs instead of wine, was memorable. Each sip heightened her awareness, allowing her to slow down and genuinely savor the flavors of her food without the haze of alcohol.
Karthika continued her alcohol-free travels, facing various challenges along the way. In Northern Ireland, surrounded by a culture celebrated for its whiskey and beer, she felt a sense of exclusion. A solo cruise to Antarctica proved even more trying as complimentary fine wines served at dinner amplified her sense of missing out.
Despite the awkwardness she sometimes faced when handed a drink or questioned about her choice to abstain, Karthika notes that opting out of alcohol has been liberating. She has developed the energy to seize the day earlier and introduces herself to locals with genuine curiosity instead of relying on alcohol as a social crutch. Rather than planning evenings around drinking, she now seeks out live music, quaint cafés, and opportunities for introspection.
The absence of alcohol has sparked a feeling of adventure within her, allowing for creative experiences that yield joy. This transformation is not an outright declaration of permanent sobriety; Karthika sees her choice as part of a broader exploration of being fully present in her life and travels. This newfound awareness has shaped a different way for her to navigate the world, allowing her to create richer, more meaningful travel experiences without the fog of drink.
