Nicola Nice explores the overlooked contributions of women to cocktail culture in her upcoming book, "The Cocktail Parlor: How Women Brought the Cocktail Home." With a background in sociology and experience in the spirits industry, Nice’s book is gaining recognition, including a nomination for a Spirited Award at Tales of the Cocktail. The book not only delves into the historical roles women played in cocktail culture but also includes 100 recipes for both classic and modern drinks.
In her research, Nice emphasizes that while the cocktail narrative often highlights bartending manuals and professional mixologists, much of the actual cocktail consumption occurs at home. She aims to illuminate how women, guided by household management books and traditions, have shaped cocktail culture. These personal networks and shared recipes were fundamental to the ways cocktails were enjoyed without the male-centric spotlight.
Among her key findings, Nice discovered that women have historically influenced both the creation and popularity of cocktails. For example, early 19th-century women used brandy to make cordials and became adept at crafting drinks for home consumption. Recipes for punches, cordials, and other cocktails began to emerge from women’s writings and household management texts, signifying a shift in how cocktails were perceived and enjoyed.
Moreover, her research highlights the significance of drinks like the sherry cobbler, which became immensely popular among women partly because of its lower alcohol content, allowing them to drink comfortably while maintaining control. This historical perspective reinforces the notion that women continue to drive trends in cocktail culture, including the modern low ABV movement.
As Nice looks to share her findings, she invites readers to appreciate the diverse narratives that compose the history of cocktails and the role women have played in this evolution. She will sign copies of her book at the Bookstore and Bitters Market on July 23.
