A world-renowned celebrity chef has debuted his first restaurant in New Jersey, adding to his already illustrious culinary empire. Chef Masaharu Morimoto, famous for his role in "Iron Chef," opened MM by Morimoto, a Japanese steakhouse, in Montclair at the end of July. This addition allows New Jerseyans to experience Morimoto’s renowned cuisine without having to journey to New York City.
Morimoto partnered with Luck Sarabhayavanija, a restaurateur known for popular spots like Ani Ramen, to create a dining experience that blends traditional Japanese techniques with global influences. During discussions about the restaurant, Morimoto expressed his enthusiasm: “Why not New Jersey? It’s a really nice place. People don’t have to travel into the city anymore to try my food.”
The restaurant is a sophisticated yet approachable space featuring a large bar and comfortable seating areas. Guests can admire digital screens displaying serene visuals that enhance the restaurant’s ambiance while they enjoy a menu packed with Morimoto’s signature dishes.
Highlighted menu items include the Tuna Pizza ($22), a fusion of Japanese, Mexican, and Italian flavors that combines a light tortilla with bigeye tuna and anchovy oil. Another standout is the A5 Wagyu Carpaccio ($35), where the beef is delicately seared and enhanced by yuzu soy and garlic oil. For those who crave something savory, the Sticky Ribs ($25) are braised and fried, resulting in a tender, flavor-packed dish. Sushi items, such as Aburi Sashimi ($23), feature lightly seared fish and showcase the precise artistry that Morimoto is known for.
The steak offerings also command attention, including the Australian Wagyu Fillet ($85) and Emperor Prime Rib ($55), both served on sizzling cast-iron plates. Dessert isn’t to be missed, with an impressive table-side Tiramisu ($18) bringing a light and airy finish to the meal.
With an atmosphere encouraging relaxation and enjoyment, the service at MM by Morimoto is noted to be exceptional. However, guests should be prepared for the upscale pricing, with entrees reaching up to $245.
Morimoto anticipates further culinary ventures in New Jersey, aiming to elevate the state’s food scene even more. Future plans include opening MoriMori, a hand roll concept in Paramus and Hoboken.
As Montclair embraces this noteworthy addition, it’s clear that MM by Morimoto aims not just to impress but to redefine the dining expectations of New Jersey’s residents, making it a landmark in the state’s culinary landscape.
