The UK Foreign Office has issued an urgent travel warning for Indonesia following a wave of violent riots that have resulted in seven fatalities and hundreds of injuries, marking the worst civil unrest the nation has experienced in recent years.
Amid increasing public outrage over lavish new parliamentary benefits, demonstrations erupted, first in Jakarta and soon spreading across the archipelago. Protesters have clashed with police, set regional government buildings ablaze, and engaged in looting as the situation escalates. The chaos has led to reports of deaths in various locations, including Makassar, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, and Solo.
President Prabowo Subianto expressed shock over the ongoing violence and has ordered a rigorous crackdown on rioters. He emphasized the potential for unlawful acts, including treason and terrorism, amid growing unrest. Meanwhile, a member of the ruling party acknowledged that the intensity of the protests had taken the government by surprise.
Protests have escalated significantly, with an influx of Molotov cocktails thrown at police. In response, military forces have been deployed throughout Jakarta, and reports indicate that snipers have been positioned in strategic areas. The United Nations has called for an investigation into allegations of excessive force used by police.
Despite the government’s attempts to calm the situation by offering to eliminate controversial allowances for MPs, protest leaders have deemed these concessions insufficient and demand action addressing the root causes of public anger.
The Foreign Office has advised British travelers to steer clear of protests and large gatherings, highlighting that peaceful demonstrations could quickly turn violent. Furthermore, they warned about the terrorist threat in Indonesia, which could target various locations frequented by tourists, including beaches and shopping centers.
Travelers to Bali are also cautioned about hidden dangers such as sexual assaults, drink tampering, and the consumption of fake alcohol. They are advised to remain vigilant, safeguard their belongings, and ensure they only consume drinks from authorized sources. The Foreign Office has reiterated the importance of comprehensive travel insurance for any journey abroad.
