Verdure Kitchen and Cocktails, a fine dining African restaurant located in Midtown Atlanta, has quickly established itself as a vibrant "oasis" of African cuisine. Recently celebrating its second anniversary, the restaurant is helmed by executive chef Jean Louis-Sangare, who has dedicated himself to crafting meals that celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the continent.
Chef Sangare’s journey began in Côte d’Ivoire, where he learned to cook by watching his mother in their family kitchen. These early experiences fueled his desire to pursue a culinary education in Paris. He later spent 15 years as the chef de cuisine at the New York location of Le Bilboquet before moving to Atlanta to lead the French bistro branch.
The idea for Verdure, realized alongside restaurateurs Aïda Lemma and Jacob Ilkner in July 2023, emerged from a vision to elevate African cuisine to the same level of recognition as French cuisine. “It’s a blessing to see the first African fine dining opening in Atlanta succeed,” said Sangare, reflecting on his aspiration to showcase the beauty and diversity of African culinary traditions.
The restaurant has become a popular venue for date nights and social gatherings, often featuring live music that enhances its inviting atmosphere. “I’m proud to represent Africa in the culinary industry,” Sangare stated. He aims to introduce diners to the rich flavors of African cuisine through a fusion of traditional and Western cooking techniques.
Sangare emphasizes the uniqueness of African cuisine, which is characterized by bold flavors and fresh ingredients distinctive to various regions. His menu offers a culinary journey with dishes inspired by countries such as Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Morocco, incorporating innovative twists on traditional recipes.
Among the standout offerings are shrimp and avocado plantain bites, Nigerian spiced crab cakes, and Ethiopian honey-glazed sea bass. The warm, upscale ambiance and carefully crafted cocktails further enhance the dining experience, making Verdure a true destination for those looking to explore the depths of African gastronomy.
Looking to the future, Chef Sangare hopes to expand Verdure to cities like Miami, New York, and D.C., eager to bring the essence of African cuisine to a broader audience.
