The couple has been together for over two decades, and they emphasize the importance of mutual respect in maintaining a healthy relationship. As they enjoyed drinks together, Burtka realized that his mocktails often felt juvenile—simple mixtures of juices that didn’t match the complexity of their cocktail counterparts.
To address this, Harris, an accomplished mixologist, began crafting mocktails that mirrored his cocktails, leading to the birth of their new book that features recipes divided into four categories inspired by the elements: water, fire, air, and earth. This organization reflects the couple’s belief that drinks can evoke different moods, enhancing the experience of any occasion.
Among their drink offerings, “Both Sides of the Glass” includes classics like Mai Tais and margaritas, and even inventive options like a Negroni alongside its non-alcoholic version. Burtka pointed out that the evolution of their mixed drinks was about feeling more adult in their choices, which is particularly meaningful for their fraternal twins, Harper and Gideon, who can partake in the mocktail creations during family gatherings like Thanksgiving.
Aside from the mixology aspect, Harris and Burtka have embraced their love for Halloween through themed drinks, such as the Black Magic Margarita and its alcohol-free counterpart. As they plan their Halloween costumes for this year, they cherish the familial tradition, even as their children transition into their teenage years.
Despite busy schedules, which include Harris performing on Broadway, the couple is dedicated to celebrating Halloween and continuing to create delicious, sophisticated beverages that everyone can enjoy.
