American travelers will soon be required to obtain travel authorization to visit 30 European countries, starting in the fourth quarter of 2026. This change does not signal the end of visa-free travel for U.S. citizens, contrary to some reports suggesting that the European Union plans to revoke such privileges due to escalating tensions with the U.S.
From February 1, 2026, the EU will impose a 10% tariff on products from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland—an increase to 25% is expected by June 1—responding to President Donald Trump’s trade actions regarding Denmark’s refusal to sell Greenland. This increase in tariffs corresponds to the friction surrounding Trump’s intentions to control Greenland, leading to military exercises by European NATO allies in the region.
The only noteworthy modification to travel regulations involves the introduction of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), which will require U.S. citizens to apply for pre-travel authorization. This process will be necessary even for travelers who previously enjoyed visa-free access to these countries.
What ETIAS Means for Travelers
The ETIAS will replace the need for a visa for entry into nations such as Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Germany, and Italy, among others. The application fee is expected to be around 20 euros (approximately $23), and the approved authorization will be valid for three years or until the traveler’s passport expires. Americans will be allowed to stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within any 180-day window.
Despite the introduction of ETIAS, it’s vital to note that receiving authorization does not guarantee entry into these countries; border control authorities will still have the final say upon arrival.
This new requirement is also set to apply to several other countries, including Australia, Canada, Japan, and the United Kingdom, as part of a broader regulatory framework to enhance border security within the EU.
Travelers are encouraged to apply for ETIAS well in advance of their planned trips to ensure a smooth travel experience. Once submitted, applications typically yield results in a matter of minutes, barring any complications.
