Travel Photographer of the Year (TPOTY) has announced the winners of its prestigious competition, showcasing an inspiring collection of photographs that transport viewers around the globe. This year marks the 24th anniversary of the awards, which received over 20,000 submissions from both professional and amateur photographers. The entries were meticulously judged by a 16-member international panel of experts, ensuring a high standard of authenticity and creativity.
Athanasios Maloukas from Greece emerged as the overall winner, celebrated for his evocative portfolio that captures intimate moments of spiritual devotion in Konya, Turkey, and the poignant Yacente procession during Holy Week in Zamora, Spain. His photograph of the Sema ritual shows dervishes in motion and highlights the atmosphere surrounding their traditions.
The competition also featured categories that honored cultural expressions and human connections across different landscapes. For instance, in India, Dashawatar Gopalkrishna Bade won recognition for an image depicting joyful traditional dance, while Trevor Cole captured men preparing for the vibrant Durbar festival in Northern Nigeria.
Photography in monochrome also brought significant attention, such as Teo Chin Leong’s poignant depiction of a solitary worker navigating the busy streets of Tokyo, symbolizing isolation amidst urban chaos. Prashant Chacko illustrated the challenges of parenting in wildlife with his powerful portrayal of a mother bear in Alaska.
In wildlife categories, dynamic and serene moments were captured, with Dana Allen earning accolades for an image of a bull elephant amidst a cloud of dust in Tanzania, while Kevin Yu Shi documented the elusive puma in the wild landscapes of Chile.
The awards not only celebrate individual achievements but also emphasize the diversity and journalism of photography, bringing together cultures and wildlife moments that resonate on a global scale.
